Explain how the Little Mix ‘Black Magic’ Video uses Media Language (15)

The video ‘Black Magic’ uses cinematography to portray the band's equality and show that not one person Is superior to the other, they are all the same. The use of long shots of the whole band shows their equality as they are all in the shot. This is shown when they find the magic book and are all singing the spell in their room. There are close-ups of each character so that the audience can view their favourite band member but as a whole, the band is shown together in the video.

In this music video, fast-paced editing is used to match the music. This is seen towards the end of the video when they are in a classroom, the beat of the music is fast paced which matches the speed of the editing. This will make the viewers want to go back and look closer throughout the video. This matching editing and music gives a sense of realism to the audience and makes the audience relate to the band.

The mise-en-scene conforms to the genre of pop in 'Black Magic'. The bright coloured costumes and bright props are both conventions of a typical pop style video. There is a change in costume from the beginning and the end of the video. The girls in the band go from stereotypical nerds to popular girls who most people want to be like. Throughout this change, the pop conventions have not changed with it, they are still present in the whole video for example when they find the book the bright colours or the special effects are conventions of pop and after the girls change, the bright colour of their clothes give conventions of pop.

This is a brilliant response, and you have used lots of appropriate terminology. You have used a good structure and drawn on examples.
To improve this further I would urge you to discuss the representations of some of the characters within the music video. This would still link with the mise-en-scene.

    Well done Aden.
