Explain how the Little Mix ‘Black Magic’ Video uses Media Language (15)

Explain how the Little Mix ‘Black Magic’ Video uses Media Language (15) The video ‘Black Magic’ uses cinematography to portray the band's equality and show that not one person Is superior to the other, they are all the same. The use of long shots of the whole band shows their equality as they are all in the shot. This is shown when they find the magic book and are all singing the spell in their room. There are close-ups of each character so that the audience can view their favourite band member but as a whole, the band is shown together in the video. In this music video, fast-paced editing is used to match the music. This is seen towards the end of the video when they are in a classroom, the beat of the music is fast paced which matches the speed of the editing. This will make the viewers want to go back and look closer throughout the video. This matching editing and music gives a sense of realism to the audience and makes the audience relate to the band. Representation/star image in music video's

Image
Any representaition is a mixtue of:  The thing itself   The opinions of the people constructing the representation  The reaction of the individual to the representatoin  The contet of the society in which representation is taking place Nicki Minaj is represented as a confident, highly sexualised person. She wears lots of skin tight outfits which are very revealing. This relates to the male gaze theory becauase it is very appealing for men because they gain sexual gratification. Star image star image becomes a readily a recognised sign that is used in many different media forms. Stars can use the fact that their image had meanign by allowing it to be used for advertising purposes. A pop star is a manufactured image and does not correlate to person's personality behind the image.

Male gaze/uses and gratifications theory

Male gaze theory Write by Laura Mulvey - 1975 - all media products (films, tv, magazines, video games etc...) are made for heterosexual (straight) males. Women costumes are often tighter, shorter and more revealing - Women are highly sexualised in the media, Uses and gratifications theory Information: To learn about the world we live in Personal identity: To IDENTIFY with a star Entertainment: To fill time/escape from normal life Personal relationships:  With each other - using the media as a talking point to build friendships.  E.G. "did you see Eastenders last night?" With the media - building a 'relationship' with a celebrity E.G. Kim Kardashian - watching her show, following her on twitter, buying her branded products Our set texts: -  The Vamps - 'somebody to you' ft Demi Lovato                         - Little Mix - 'black magic' 1.
