Goodwin's theory
1.
Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics
(e.g. stage performance in rock video, dance routine)

4.
The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close
ups
of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their
work (a
visual style).
5.
There is frequently reference to notion of looking
(screens within
screens,
telescopes, etc) and
particularly voyeuristic treatment of the
female
body.
6.
There is often intertextual reference (to films, tv programmes, other music videos etc)
Goodwin's theory applied to music videos
Big for your boots
1. This music video demonstrates genre characteristics of grime as they are in council estate, there is lots of smoke, lots of boys behind Stormzy which could connote a gang.
2. There is a relation between the lyrics and visuals as when he says 'Devil on my shoulder' he points at his shoulder
3. There is a relation between music and visuals because the music and editing are both fast paced and the lip-sinking is perfectly timed
4. There is lots of close-ups of Stormzy and in this video he is maintaining his known reputation of a gangsta because of he is showing a lot of attitude through his facial and body expressions and later on he is on the top of a police car which could show him rebelling against the law.
5. There is nothing to do with notions of looking and females are not treated voyeuristically. Women are not secualised because stormzy has established a 'gangsta' reputation within his music videos. He typically wears tracksuits with a hoodie and a jacket and if the women are sexualised they will not be conforming to his persona.
6. There is no intertextual references made in this video
You've answered the questions well, but I want you to elaborate more in order to achieve a high level. For example, WHY are females not sexualised within Stormzy's music video? Why have they challenge this aspect of Goodwin's theory.
