How does the choice (selection and exclusion) of elements influence meaning on the magazine cover?

The typography used is mainly bold and capitalised with a few exceptions of unbold texts.
For example on one of the cover lines "Randy Newman" is bold and capitalised however underneath it "TRUMP IS LIKE A CHARACTER IN MY SONGS" isn't bold which highlights how the bold text catches the reader attention while the unbold text is used for extra information and to entice the audience to read on as well as using the bold text to mirror the genre of rock and what the magazine is trying to convey throughout the main article as the band are frequently viewed as being bold and different.

Analyse image of the featured Artist, Masthead, Main coverline, cover lines, Selling lines. Look at the colour used, facial expression, clothing, font, camera angle, eye contact. What does it suggest? Does it relate to the genre?

The main image of the artist making direct eye contact suggests that the magazine is looking at the reader which would make them feel more involved and feel like the magazine is made for them which will result in them buying it. furthermore, the serious face in the main image is a typical connotation of the rock genre which makes it easy for the audience that like this genre to see it apart from the other magazines
While the masthead is the biggest text on the page to attract the readers, the main cover line is also a big size compared to the rest of the cover lines as well as having very bright colours over them. This is to entice the reader and give them a preview of what is inside the magazine
The colours used are yellow, pink, white, grey and black. This is used to show the readers how different the band is compared to other rock genres. Typical colours of the rock genre are black and any other dark colours. Because the band is so popular it portrays them as different in a positive way. It shows how they are prepared to try something different.
The artist on the main image is dressed in a white shirt with red lines on it with blue jacket however his hair is bright red which further emphasises how he is prepared to be different to the other rock artists. His bright hair and clothes would typically suggest he is part of the pop genre but he is just standing out from the rest of the rock genre.

What are the the codes and conventions of music magazine covers? Are these on the MOJO cover?

Font- Bold capitalisation used with the same two fonts used (apart from "The Music Magazine" on the masthead which is in a different font)

How does the choice (selection and exclusion) of elements influence meaning on the magazine cover?

The colour of the whole front cover is rainbow because the Pink Floyd symbol is a triangle with a rainbow going through it.

Analyse image of the featured Artist, Masthead, Main coverline, cover lines, Selling lines. Look at the colour used, facial expression, clothing, font, camera angle, eye contact. What does it suggest? Does it relate to the genre?

The colour scheme of the magazine is white, yellow and black because the background is multicoloured. They have made the writing colour white as a result of this because otherwise it would be too much colour and could lead the reader to think it was a different genre.
The main image is of the band members faces looking straight at the camera. This direct contact would attract the readers as they would think it was made for them.
Their faces are pale which highlights the rest of the magazine with its colourful scheme.
The shot is just of their faces and none of their body which leaves the reader to think it is a mystery and they are a different band to others. It also adds to their style of music and being involved with drugs as it is 'trippy'
This all relates to the genre of rock because of its bold and capitalised nature as rock is often viewed as being different and unique like the main image itself.

What is the language used on the front cover?

The language on the front cover, such as "attack" and "fear" connotes danger. This is typical of the rock genre because it is seen as aggressive and 'heavy'.

Is there intertextuality used to create meaning?

The main image looks like Queens famous picture (seen below) which could interest the readers as Queen was very famous so by copying their pose it could a sign of respect or gratitude. This also suggests that the band want to be known in the same way as them and believe they have a similar style of music to them.

  1. Good stuff here Aden, you've made some really nice, strong points.

Just be aware, the questions below are missing from your Sex Pistols analysis:
What is the language used on the front cover?
Is there intertextuality used to create meaning?

    Please add these in!

    Well done,
